What Shapes the Price of Data Recovery
The final price reflects the actual fault, device condition, useful data volume, any donor parts, laboratory work and the agreed arrangements for returning the result.
Diagnostic basis
How we arrive at a quoted price
Any figure remains preliminary until a diagnostic assessment has identified the actual fault, the degree of risk and the likely recoverable scope.
Capacity and a device model are not enough to set a responsible recovery price. The storage technology, failure type, useful data, urgency, parts requirement and technical risk all affect the work involved.
Laboratory findings replace a broad preliminary estimate with a case-specific quote. Where analysis allows, they may also show the apparently recoverable files as a list or folder tree before you make a decision.
- Device: hard drive, SSD, USB drive, memory card, RAID or NAS
- Failure: logical, electronic, mechanical or a combination
- Requirement: urgency, relevant volume, priority data and handover
Assessment without charge
The initial examination considers whether recovery is feasible and supports a no-obligation quote before paid recovery begins.
Evidence for your decision
Where it is technically possible, information about the files that appear recoverable gives you something concrete on which to base your choice.
Fault-specific work
How different faults change the quoted work
A technical assessment connects the actual state of the device to the method and work included in the individual quote.
The device's true condition determines the recovery path and the work that can be quoted responsibly. Recent deletion, a failed PCB, internal hard-drive damage and a degraded multi-drive system call for different equipment, expertise and risk controls.
The quote should identify the justified method, required parts, reconstruction effort and checks on the requested result rather than attach one generic amount to a failure label.
- Logical failure: controlled imaging, file-system reconstruction and file validation
- Electronic or firmware failure: component-level access, compatible parts and safe acquisition
- Mechanical hard-drive failure: clean-room work only when internal intervention is justified
Logical fault
Typical cases include deletion, formatting, a missing partition or damaged files on storage that is still stable enough to read.
Electronic fault
This can involve a failed PCB, power event, damaged connector or firmware problem that requires technical intervention.
Mechanical fault
Head or motor trouble, impact damage and clean-room opening may require compatible donor parts followed by carefully managed reading.
RAID, NAS, server and NVR
Multi-drive systems can require reconstruction of disk order, parity and metadata before the volume becomes accessible and the priority files can be checked.
Before approval
What you should know before deciding
Assessment, transport, quoted price, likely result and confidentiality arrangements should all be clear before you give the go-ahead.
Before approval, you should have the assessment findings, quote, return terms, confidentiality approach and a realistic account of the expected outcome. Paid recovery should start only when the scope is clear and agreed.
You should not be asked to fund recovery without first understanding what appears retrievable, what does not, the proposed charge and how the available data or original device will be returned.
- Full initial assessment completed before the quote
- Shipping and return without charge where the case terms allow
- Chargeable recovery opened only with your approval
The decision remains yours
Receiving a quote does not require you to proceed; it gives you the opportunity to consider the evidence before choosing.
Care of confidential data
Handling should be confined to the agreed purpose, with access restricted and professional confidentiality maintained.
Controlled environment
Why clean-room intervention affects price
A clean room is a working requirement, not a marketing flourish, when the fault calls for opening a hard drive without adding avoidable contamination.
Mechanical recovery is priced differently from logical work because the hard drive may need to be opened under controlled clean-room conditions. This environment reduces contamination while platters, read heads and other internal components are exposed.
The work may include initial assessment, locating compatible donor components, clean handling, limited tests and a progressive reading strategy for unstable media.
- Opening a hard drive only when the mechanical evidence supports it
- Careful handling and selection of compatible donor components
- Reading by area to reduce the risk of further loss
When mechanics have failed
A need for donor parts, clean-room handling and cautious acquisition adds specialist time and materials to the quoted work.
When the fault is logical
Here, effort is more likely to centre on file structures, partition information, metadata and checking whether recovered files are usable.
Like-for-like value
Compare recovery quotes on equal terms
Alongside the amount, ask which risks the work addresses, what outcome is being offered and which technical limits still apply.
Two prices mean little unless the fault, storage technology, priority files and basis of the proposed result are comparable. An incomplete figure may leave out hardware assessment, donor parts, clean-room intervention or checks on the recovered files.
Nor does an expensive proposal justify itself. The amount should be tied to a genuine difficulty such as mechanical damage, unstable storage, intricate RAID reconstruction, real urgency, substantial volume or a particularly controlled handover.
- Be cautious of a fixed answer given without assessment
- Check each service and cost included in the proposal
- Confirm the priority data and secure handover arrangements
An incomplete preliminary figure
It may cover only one stage of a straightforward case and becomes misleading if it conceals physical damage or excludes essential assessment, imaging or validation.
A supported quotation
Its amount should follow from the proposed method, assessment evidence and an outcome that can be checked, rather than from a broad assurance.
Request a quote
Request a quote with the right details
A calm, factual account supports a more relevant price and can spare the device from further handling that aggravates its condition.
For a meaningful quote, share accurate details of the device, symptoms, incident, previous attempts, genuine urgency and priority files. This context helps prevent a preliminary estimate from being unrealistically low or so broad that it offers little guidance.
The resulting quote should cover the scope, price, indicative timing, secure handover and known constraints. If the device is behaving unstably, stop testing it while you arrange the assessment.
- Storage type, capacity, system and normal purpose
- Symptoms noticed and when the incident occurred
- Files and folders that genuinely matter most
While awaiting assessment
Do not format or repair the source, attempt a clone with unsuitable tools, or save anything new to the affected device.
Before giving approval
Proceed only when the price, technical limits, target data and arrangements for return are all clear to you.
Terms
What remains free and when payment becomes due
A price becomes a decision only after usable files have been checked and the limitations have been made clear.
The quotation, free laboratory diagnosis and private round-trip shipping are included at no charge. Before payment, the client in Ireland receives a checked file list, the price and the four statuses recoverable_verified, partial, detected_unverified and unrecoverable; only recoverable_verified is treated as recoverable.
Payment is made only after the client in Ireland accepts that list and the price. Final recovery, preparation of the result and return take place after payment.
If no usable data are found, final recovery fails or the client in Ireland declines the list or price, there is no standard charge for the intervention, outbound shipping, return shipping, customs or standard return media. A rare, costly part is the only exception and is ordered solely after separate, explicit, priced approval; its cost is non-refundable if recovery is unsuccessful.
- Free diagnosis and free quotation
- Decision based on checked files and price
- No standard charge without a usable accepted result
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What determines the price of data recovery?
Pricing is set after the assessment identifies the fault, the condition of the original media, any parts or clean-room intervention, the reconstruction required for RAID or NVR storage, and the checks needed on the priority files.
Is there a charge for the first case assessment?
No. The diagnosis, quotation and private round-trip transport are free. Payment is made only after the checked file list and price are accepted.
Why is a mechanical recovery usually more expensive?
Mechanical damage can call for clean-room opening, compatible donor parts, controlled handling and gradual acquisition of an unstable drive. The quote reflects the specialist time, materials and risk involved.
Do I have to proceed after receiving the quote?
There is no standard charge without usable data or when the client in Ireland declines. A rare, costly part is the sole exception and remains non-refundable after its separate priced approval.
Can the final price be confirmed before assessment?
No. The storage condition, recovery method, parts, priority data, reconstruction effort and handover scope must be assessed before a case-specific quote can be confirmed.
