Datastrophe

What Happens During Data Recovery

Every case follows a measured path: we understand the problem, arrange safe receipt of the device, assess it technically and explain the proposed recovery before returning usable files securely.

Five stages used to receive, assess and recover a storage device

Case journey

Five clear stages from enquiry to return

You should always know the current stage, which elements carry no commitment, what the assessment must establish and when your express approval is needed.

A case moves through five practical stages: initial guidance, receipt of the device, diagnostic assessment, approved recovery work and transfer of the files. At each point, you should have enough information to understand what comes next.

Recovery is never treated as automatic. The safer course is to stop further attempts, note the symptoms, protect the original media and establish what may still be readable before deciding whether to accept a clear quote.

  • First contact by form or telephone
  • Planned shipment, drop-off or collection of the device
  • Your decision before chargeable recovery starts

Before any commitment

Initial guidance, routing the case and arranging suitable logistics can take place without pressing you into an immediate recovery decision.

What the assessment must confirm

Only technical examination of the actual device can establish feasibility, likely timing, the recoverable scope and the final quoted price.

Key checkpoint: paid recovery should begin only after the likely outcome, price and known limitations have been explained clearly.
Providing the first details of a data recovery case online or by telephone

First details

Begin online or speak with us

The best starting point is a factual account of the device, symptoms, circumstances, priority data and genuine urgency, without guessing at the fault.

The opening conversation helps us understand the case; it is not a shortcut to a one-size-fits-all answer. An online request captures the device type, symptoms, date of the incident, earlier attempts and the files that matter most.

If a direct discussion would be more useful, a telephone call can clarify genuine urgency, prevent risky handling and help prepare collection or shipping with appropriate packing advice.

  • Device type, capacity, operating system and incident context
  • Any error, unusual sound, impact, liquid exposure or power event
  • The folders and files that should be checked first

Online request

The form keeps the essential facts together, reduces omissions and helps us prepare the next step without asking you to enter the same details again.

Telephone discussion

A call is especially helpful where time genuinely matters, the symptoms are unclear or unstable media needs to be powered down and packed promptly.

Until you have reliable guidance, avoid rerunning automated repairs or writing to the device simply to check whether it responds.
A storage device protected for tracked transport to the data recovery laboratory

Protected transport

Safe collection, transport and receipt

Logistics move the device; diagnosis, recovery and verification remain entirely with Datastrophe.

Datastrophe performs diagnosis and recovery directly in its laboratory. A private carrier transports the sealed parcel only and never accesses, diagnoses or processes the data.

Packing instructions and tracking are agreed before dispatch; on arrival, Datastrophe matches the media to the technical case without allowing the courier to access its contents.

  • Private round-trip transport included
  • Carrier has no access to the data
  • Diagnosis and recovery in the Datastrophe laboratory

Before dispatch

Packing, collection and identification are confirmed without powering the unstable media again.

At the laboratory

Datastrophe records receipt and routes the media to the appropriate diagnostic path.

The carrier handles logistics only. It does not diagnose the media or perform data recovery.
Fault assessment findings with a list of potentially recoverable files

Technical findings

Initial assessment and a useful report

Recognition of the device is only one clue; a worthwhile assessment explains the recoverable prospect and identifies the points that cannot yet be certain.

A case assessment should give you a sound basis for deciding: feasibility, risks, likely timing, known limits and, where possible, a file list or folder tree. Its report should distinguish files that are merely detected from those that are readable, incomplete or genuinely usable.

The checks depend on the storage technology and may examine electronics, unstable mechanical parts, unreadable sectors, partition information, file-system structures, RAID configuration or encryption.

  • Electronic, mechanical or logical examination matched to the symptoms
  • Written findings describing the apparent recoverable scope
  • A folder tree or file listing where the analysis can provide one

Recovery prospects

The outlook rests on the readable areas, physical condition, surviving metadata, any encryption and whether new data was written after the loss.

Decision-ready findings

The report should let you approve, decline or refine the proposed work without having to make an unclear commercial choice.

A meaningful report makes the distinction between a detected entry, a readable file, a partial file and one that has been checked as usable.
Reviewing and approving a quotation before chargeable data recovery

Your approval

A clear quotation before recovery

The free diagnosis, checked file list, clear statuses and price are available before payment.

The quotation and free laboratory diagnosis come before any payment. Private round-trip transport is included. Before payment, the client in Ireland receives the price and a checked file list using recoverable_verified, partial, detected_unverified and unrecoverable. Only recoverable_verified items are described as recoverable.

Payment is due only if the client in Ireland accepts the file list and price. After payment, Datastrophe performs final recovery, prepares the result and arranges its return. If no usable data are found, final recovery fails or the client in Ireland declines the list or price, no standard fee is due for the intervention, outbound transport, return transport, customs or standard return media. A rare, costly part is the only exception: it requires separate, explicit, priced approval and remains non-refundable even if recovery does not succeed.

  • Checked file list and price before payment
  • Only recoverable_verified counts as recoverable
  • Final recovery only after acceptance

Before the decision

The free diagnosis, checked file list, clear statuses and price are available before payment.

After the decision

Final recovery, preparation and return of the result follow acceptance and payment.

No standard charge applies without a usable or accepted result; only a rare part approved separately at a stated price remains non-refundable.
Secure handover of checked recovered files on healthy storage

Return of data

Secure handover and a clear outcome

A useful result means files you can open and navigate in a sensible folder structure, rather than an unexplained total volume.

Final recovery, preparation and return of the result follow acceptance and payment.

The closing information explains what was recovered, which items are partial or absent, and how to use the returned data without relying on the failed original device again.

  • Copy to sound storage or provision through a managed download
  • Checks focused on the files identified as most important
  • Clear notes on incomplete items and remaining limitations

Destination storage

The receiving medium should be sound, readable and large enough for the result, with an orderly layout that makes important data straightforward to find.

Final record

Closing notes set out what was handed over, what could not be retrieved and the sensible precautions to follow afterwards.

The original device has not been restored to dependable service. Recovery is intended to return whatever data can be retrieved, not to make failed media safe for reuse.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Am I committed to recovery once the device is assessed?

No. The technical review identifies feasibility, the apparent recoverable scope, price and limitations. Paid recovery begins only after you accept the terms set out in the quote.

How is my storage device sent or collected?

A private carrier provides the included round-trip transport for the sealed parcel. Datastrophe supplies packing instructions, receives the media at its laboratory and performs the diagnosis and recovery itself.

What should I expect from the assessment report?

It should cover feasibility, risks, the likely recoverable scope and technical limits. Where the analysis permits, it also includes a file list or folder tree to help you decide.

What if I choose not to accept the quote?

If the client in Ireland declines, the case closes with no standard intervention, transport, customs or return-media fee; only a rare part approved separately with a stated price remains non-refundable.

Will the original device be reliable again after recovery?

No. The purpose is to extract usable data and return it on sound storage. A device that has suffered data loss should not be considered dependable enough to place back into normal use.

Diagnostic assessment

Unsure about a storage device or fault?

Datastrophe qualifies the risk before any recovery attempt and points you towards the safest next step.
