Distinguishing deletion, index loss and overwriting
CCTV footage can disappear for several reasons. For a New Zealand CCTV case, retain the recorder's local clock setting, channel map and exact footage window before any export or restart. It may have been deleted through the interface, hidden by a corrupted index, lost after a fault or replaced by the recording loop. These situations require distinct responses.
Logical deletion may leave fragments on the storage device. A lost index can make sequences invisible even when the streams remain. Complete overwriting is more severe: new footage has replaced the blocks holding the requested period.
The diagnostic assessment determines which situation applies. Without that distinction, an impossible outcome might be promised or a realistic recovery opportunity missed.
The distinction is crucial. Deletion through the interface may at times alter only a reference table. Failure during a write can hide a sequence without erasing it. A recording loop, by contrast, progressively replaces older blocks with new footage. The longer the system operates after the incident, the more the analysis turns towards residual fragments.
Document the interval between the event and the recorder being stopped. Two hours, two days and two weeks produce very distinct cases. The number of cameras and their resolution can accelerate overwriting considerably.

When footage is missing, the recorder should not continue writing unnecessarily. Shut it down cleanly if the interface allows, or disconnect power carefully. The objective isn't to repair the system on site but to freeze its current state.
Record the required period, relevant cameras and when the disappearance was discovered. These details direct the analysis: locating three minutes from one camera is very distinct from reconstructing a full week.
Don't restart the loop, reset the system or format the drive. Even an operation described as routine maintenance can replace indexes or produce new logs.
If the premises still need surveillance, put new storage into service and keep the old device powered down. This protects the site without sacrificing the sought-after sequence. The original disk, card or volume becomes material for assessment rather than production storage.
Avoid making multiple exports "just in case". A targeted export may be appropriate when the system is healthy, but bulk extraction from a fragile drive can waste time and worsen the fault. The observed symptoms should determine the choice.

Evaluating the prospects without overpromising
Recovery prospects depend on available capacity, retention period, camera count, resolution, codec and activity after the incident. A system retaining 30 days of footage allows more time than a small drive operating at full capacity.
Motion-triggered systems may leave areas less heavily written. Continuous high-resolution recording replaces blocks faster, while multi-camera NVRs frequently consume capacity promptly.
A responsible data recovery laboratory can't guarantee overwritten video. It can clarify what will be inspected: indexes, stream fragments, thumbnails, logs, adjacent time ranges and any existing exports.
The assessment should remain concrete. A period within the theoretical retention window has better, but not automatic, prospects. If the recorder continued writing beyond that period, recovery may be limited to residual traces. Protect any partial export already made because it may contain usable footage despite its defects.
Motion detection introduces another possibility: the absence of a file may mean that no event was recorded, the threshold was set incorrectly or the index is corrupt. The assessment must verify the recording calendar rather than searching only for a video file.
Adjacent periods should also be inspected. A poorly synchronised camera, clock drift or a daylight-saving change can shift the sought-after sequence. Before concluding that it was overwritten, the laboratory may inspect the minutes or hours around the reported range, particularly when cameras show distinct times.

Protecting evidential context
Footage may be used to document a theft, accident, intrusion or dispute. In that situation, recovery work must remain traceable. The original storage device should be protected when practicable and handling kept to a minimum.
A recovered sequence needs context: camera channel, period, format, any interruptions and known limits. A raw conversion with no explanation may be difficult to use even when it plays in a video application.
State at the outset if the footage may be used as evidence. The handover will need more documentation than footage intended solely for internal viewing.
Don't rename, convert or trim files without retaining a record of the operation. Conversion may make the sequence viewable, but must not replace the recovered original or remove provenance details. The report should establish unreadable areas, gaps, uncertain timestamps and unattributed fragments.
This transparency also protects the requester. Partly recovered footage may remain valuable when its scope is clear. It becomes misleading if presented as complete while several minutes are missing.

Define the required outcome precisely: one camera, a time range, an export that was deleted or confirmation that blocks were overwritten. A clear request concentrates the analysis on the relevant footage rather than producing a bulk recovery that is hard to verify.
