The word formatting covers very different operations. A quick format may mainly replace file-system structures, while a full format, operating-system installation, or initialization can write across much more of the device.
After a quick format, content can remain in data areas while paths, names, folders and indexes are lost or inconsistent. Recovery then reconstructs from the remaining traces.
Prospects fall when formatted storage is reused. Every new file, installation, copy or update can replace an area that held former data. The volume of later writes matters more than elapsed time alone.
Stop using the device. Set aside the formatted hard drive, SSD, USB flash drive or memory card before any test.

Separate deletion, formatting, and overwriting
Deletion may leave content in place until its space is reused. Formatting changes the structures that describe a volume, while overwriting directly replaces old blocks with new content; these outcomes aren't interchangeable.
The distinction is essential. A deleted file may remain recoverable, while one replaced by another is generally no longer available in its former version. Folder names can disappear even where raw content remains partly present.
Storage technology affects the result too. On SSD, TRIM and flash management may make some content unavailable quickly. Former areas can remain longer on a hard drive, though later writes still replace them.

Filenames aren't guaranteed. Some content may return without its original tree. This can be enough for photographs, while structure may be as important as content for a complex project, database or mailbox.

Prevent additional writes after formatting
After an accidental format, stop using the source. Reinstallation, new folders, copied files, repair tools, and repeated utilities can overwrite content or add stress before a controlled image exists.
Don't format again in another file system as a correction. Changing exFAT to NTFS, initializing a disk or recreating a partition can replace useful structures. A formatting error isn't repaired by a second format.
Disconnect external storage cleanly and preserve it. For a formatted system disk, shut down the computer and don't boot from it. Starting the system can write logs, caches and temporary files.
Damaged hard drive: recover or replace reinforces the distinction between returning a machine to service and preserving its data.
Automated utilities create another problem when installed onto the formatted device. Installation alone can replace relevant areas. Any reasonable test should run from other storage and never write to the source.

Determine which file structures remain
Depending on the surviving file-system metadata, recovery may preserve folders and names or may need to identify photos, videos, documents, and databases from raw content. The available level must be measured, not assumed.
Signature-based reconstruction can recover files without original names. It may suit photographs and documents but is less useful for databases, projects and complex folder structures. Value depends on the intended use.
Fragmented files are harder. A long video, database or large file may occupy several areas. Lost metadata and later writes can leave reconstruction partial.
Datastrophe works from an image when possible. The formatted device remains preserved while analysis separates complete data, usable fragments and replaced areas. This avoids unrealistic promises.
Match validation to the file type. A photograph should open fully, a video play to the end, an archive decompress and a database work in its application. A name in a list is insufficient.

Reduce wrong-drive formatting risk
Before formatting, verify the disk identifier, label volumes clearly, disconnect unrelated storage, read the full prompt, and confirm a tested backup. These small controls prevent many wrong-device incidents.
Businesses should restrict initialization rights and document critical volumes. Similar labels, sizes or paths can lead maintenance work to format the wrong disk.
Copy memory cards, USB devices and external disks before reuse. A camera, drone or set-top box may offer to format storage that still holds useful data. Verify the backup before accepting.
After formatting, random testing is rarely the best response. Stop writes, identify the device, state priority files and request evaluation to preserve the best chance of a usable result.
Interface habits matter too. Before formatting, read the volume name, capacity, path and device. Disconnecting unrelated disks during maintenance prevents many human errors.
Separate test and production storage within a team. A poorly named temporary disk can be mistaken for an archive. Clear labels and a confirmation step reduce that risk.
The check takes little time and avoids losses that are difficult to explain afterward.
