Recognise Serious Symptoms
A DVR or NVR hard drive can fail gradually or suddenly. Common signs include repeated clicking, slowness, recorder restarts, skipped sequences, failed exports and a message asking to format the device.
No display does not mean no data. The recorder may have lost access to its index while video streams remain. A computer may also refuse to show content because it does not understand the proprietary format.
The symptom shapes the assessment. A silent, absent drive calls for different precautions from one that is recognised but has many unstable sectors.
Noise suggests mechanical failure and should end testing. Intermittent recognition may indicate unstable sectors or fragile electronics. A drive the DVR wants to format may still contain footage even though the index or recording structure no longer responds correctly.
Record the exact behaviour rather than saying only that it "does not work". The displayed message, time before it stalls, noise, temperature and start of the incident help select a suitable acquisition approach.

Avoid Repeated Restarts
Each restart can resume writing, force a check, recreate logs or worsen mechanical failure. Repeated attempts sometimes reduce the readable areas of a fragile drive.
Switch off the recorder, photograph the installation and remove the device only if you can do so without impact or changing its position. Keep the order of all drives in a multi-disk system.
Do not accept formatting, initialisation or automatic repair. These actions can make recovery more complex even when the recorder itself proposes them.
Repeated restarts create two problems. They physically stress a failing drive and can generate new service writes, including logs, indexes, temporary files and volume checks. In a loop-recording system, they may also bring overwriting closer to the required time window.
If recording must continue, install a new device for production and retain the old drive separately. This prevents an urgent surveillance need from becoming permanent loss of earlier footage.

Create An Image Before Video Analysis
Assessment of a CCTV drive begins with its physical condition. Until the device is stabilised or imaged, video reconstruction is secondary. Reading streams directly from the original would add risk.
The laboratory first seeks a technical image, adapting acquisition around weak sectors. Priority areas may include indexes, file tables, stream fragments and logs that identify the requested period.
Once an image exists, video analysis can address formats, channels, timestamps, fragments and playback consistency. Separating the stages protects the drive and clarifies realistic prospects.
A technical image is not a simple file duplicate. It must reflect the device condition, revisit weak areas carefully and preserve sectors needed for chronology. On a highly unstable drive, the index and required period may come before secondary archives.

Understand The Physical Limits
Some damage severely limits recovery: scratched platters, failed heads, a seized motor, badly degraded surfaces or completely overwritten blocks. A laboratory should state these limits without turning diagnosis into a promise.
The drive may be partly readable. In that case, recovery should target the relevant period rather than copy the entire volume indiscriminately. Ten important minutes may matter more than a complete but irrelevant history.
This is particularly true where footage may be used as evidence. The handover should state what is complete, partial or absent.
The CCTV format can also impose a limit. A physically recovered disk does not guarantee that every video will play immediately. A damaged proprietary index may still require streams, channels and timestamps to be reconstructed. Physical assessment and video analysis are related but distinct stages.
Conversely, a lightly damaged drive can yield a strong result when the recorder was stopped early and the requested period was not overwritten. That is why stopping further attempts is the best action before sending it.
Physical and video condition do not always decline together. A drive can be mechanically readable but contain a badly damaged index. It may also be fragile while preserving exactly the blocks needed for the event. Avoid quick binary conclusions.

Where possible, include the drive, recorder, power supply and required-period details. Do not separate multiple drives without labelling them. A simple enclosure-slot number can prevent incorrect reconstruction.
State whether the drive was connected to a computer, a utility was run or the DVR proposed formatting. This is not about judging earlier actions; it establishes which writes may have changed the device. Clear chronology helps the laboratory prioritise the right areas.
Finally, provide the useful time window, even if approximate. A targeted search on the right camera and period reduces unnecessary handling and improves final validation.
