Understand how moisture enters an external drive

Recognize signs of moisture exposure
Moisture damage may first appear as failed mounting, disconnects, incorrect capacity, or severe slowness. Discoloration on a connector, an unusual odor, or a hot enclosure also calls for an immediate stop.
Record the exposure date and duration, visible water, drying attempts, connections already made and messages shown. This chronology helps distinguish immediate electronic failure, progressive corrosion and mechanical problems.

Keep the drive unpowered in a dry, stable location away from heat and impact. Retain the original cable, enclosure, power adapter, and source-computer details because any one of them may help explain the symptoms.
